Interview a Homeschool Mama | Nor Azrin

Nor is a homeschool mom who dedicated her life to her daughter, who is currently 9 years old. She gave up her career to become a full-time stay at home Mama and teach her daughter by herself alongside her husband and supportive homeschooling community in Malaysia.

Before we jump in.

I first approached Nor a couple of months ago when I noticed her Instagram posts showcasing homeschooling in Malaysia.

I became fascinated with the opportunities her daughter has, so I sent her a DM asking if I could interview her! I was so excited when she happily replied and was willing to share her part of the world with us!

I’m so thankful and excited to bring you some homeschool insights from another family, in another country!

INTRODUCE YOURSELF, INCLUDING YOUR PASSIONS.

Hi, my name is Nor Azrin. I am SAHM currently homeschooling my DD 9 years old. We are from Selangor, Malaysia.

I first found out about homeschooling when I was 7 months pregnant. I was reading a newspaper during my lunch break and there was an article about a passionate mom who was homeschooling her kids. Later that day I was reading her blog to understand more about their daily homeschooling life.

Since then, I have searched all over the internet about homeschooling and got in touch via forums, before they started Facebook groups. Once my DD was born, I was busy caught up with works and my parents took care of my DD for a while.

Fast forward to 4 years later, when I decided to quit my job and stay at home with her. I started to explain about homeschooling to my husband and he agreed immediately. The reason why we both decided to homeschool mostly because we do not like the systems, the environment and the opportunities that we can get outside of the school building.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN HOMESCHOOLED FOR?

We have been homeschooling forever.

WHY DO YOU HOMESCHOOL?

We wanted to let the kid decided their path and not be only academically based. Our world is evolving and the things that they are learning today might not be useful in the near future. Perhaps we should learn what we passionate about instead of learning everything but have to decide later once you finished school.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO HOMESCHOOL IN MALAYSIA? WHAT ARE THE LEGAL REQUIREMENTS?

Home-school requires a different approach in Malaysia. According to our Education Act, it is compulsory kids age 7 – 12 years old to attend primary school. By right, parents who want to home-school their children are required to apply for a permit with the MOE, but because it is almost impossible to get one from the ministry if you have normal kids, homeschooling parents generally would opt to go under the radar. Parents are convinced that they are indeed keeping with the spirit of the law by providing a favourable environment and education for their children to reach their best potential.

WHAT IS YOUR METHOD OF HOMESCHOOL? DO YOU HAVE A ROUTINE?

We are using traditional homeschooling method. We have a specific routine to avoid any distraction and frustration. We have been changing the learning style according to her age and interest and aims.

From Monday to Wednesday we study and complete workbooks for 3 subjects which is English, Mathematics and Islamic Studies.

Thursday she joins science and history class with a homeschool mom plus other 5 homeschool kids.

Friday she will go for swimming class and every alternate Saturday she will join sea scout program organise by both of us with another couple of homeschooling parents.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU FACE IN YOUR HOMESCHOOL LIFE?

Mostly finance because we have to buy everything that we need. Plus, we have to initiate everything on things she wants to learn either as a community or by finding teachers.

DO YOU WANT TO ADD ANYTHING?

If you choose this path of becoming a homeschooler, please understand that you are not alone. Reach out to your local homeschool community, make friends and go out. Do not isolate yourself.
